Bullpen Sauce Pre-Workout Ingredients Explained
What Makes a Good Pre-Workout? Inside Bullpen Sauce's Research-Driven Formula
What Makes a Good Pre-Workout? Inside Bullpen Sauce's Research-Driven Formula
A pre-workout should do more than make you feel stimulated. The best formulas are built around a clear training purpose: improve alertness, support high-intensity work, promote blood flow and help the athlete stay productive as fatigue builds. They should also show exactly how much of each ingredient is present.
Bullpen Sauce Pre-Workout follows that approach. One scoop combines 7 grams of L-citrulline, 3.2 grams of beta-alanine, 2.5 grams of betaine anhydrous, 1.5 grams of Nitrosigine, 200 milligrams of natural caffeine and a broader focus-and-performance blend. The formula uses no proprietary blend, so the label can be evaluated ingredient by ingredient rather than accepted on marketing alone.
The finished Sauce blend has not been established by a published clinical trial as a complete product, so the responsible approach is to evaluate its ingredient doses and human evidence without pretending every addition is equally proven.

7 Grams of L-Citrulline: A Serious Pump Foundation
L-citrulline is an amino acid that can increase circulating arginine, which the body uses to produce nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax and widen, supporting blood flow during exercise. In practical gym terms, that is why citrulline is commonly associated with muscle pumps and why researchers have studied it for high-intensity performance.
A 2019 meta-analysis found a small overall benefit of acute citrulline supplementation for high-intensity strength and power, while emphasizing that protocols vary (Trexler et al., 2019). Sauce provides 7 grams of pure L-citrulline. That distinction matters because “citrulline malate” includes both citrulline and malate and may supply less actual citrulline than the headline weight suggests.
1.5 Grams of Nitrosigine: A Second Blood-Flow Pathway
Nitrosigine is a patented bonded arginine silicate ingredient. In a randomized crossover study, a 1.5-gram dose of Nitrosigine increased flow-mediated dilation, a measure of vascular responsiveness, compared with placebo (Rogers et al., 2020). Sauce uses that same 1.5-gram amount.
Improved vascular responsiveness is not direct proof of more muscle or strength, but it gives a credible human-data rationale for pairing Nitrosigine with L-citrulline.
400 Milligrams of Citriva: A Citrus-Flavanone Addition
Citriva is a proprietary sweet-orange flavanone complex. Related citrus extracts have produced promising results in selected vascular and exercise studies, but products and doses differ. It is best viewed as a complementary component; L-citrulline and Nitrosigine provide the clearer acute blood-flow rationale.
3.2 Grams of Beta-Alanine: Built for Repeated Hard Efforts
Beta-alanine helps the body produce carnosine, a compound stored in muscle that helps buffer acidity during hard exercise. This matters most when intense efforts last long enough for hydrogen ions to accumulate - often during repeated sets, high-rep work, intervals and efforts lasting roughly one to several minutes.
Unlike caffeine, beta-alanine works through repeated daily intake. The International Society of Sports Nutrition reports that approximately 4 to 6 grams per day for at least two to four weeks can improve certain high-intensity exercise tasks (Trexler et al., 2015). Sauce provides 3.2 grams, a meaningful amount, though users prioritizing saturation should consider total daily intake.
Beta-alanine can cause a harmless tingling or prickling sensation called paresthesia. The feeling is not evidence that the product is “kicking in,” and it is not required for beta-alanine to work. Starting with a partial scoop can help a new user assess tolerance.
2.5 Grams of Betaine Anhydrous: A Research-Relevant Dose
Betaine, or TMG, acts as an osmolyte and participates in methyl-group metabolism. Evidence for strength and power is mixed, but a controlled study using 2.5 grams per day improved total bench-press repetitions and volume without improving every outcome (Trepanowski et al., 2011). Sauce supplies that same research-relevant amount.
1 Gram of Taurine: Supportive Rather Than Sensational
Taurine participates in cell-volume regulation and calcium handling. Human performance findings are inconsistent, so its 1-gram dose is best viewed as support for the broader formula rather than a primary selling point.
200 Milligrams of Natural Caffeine: Useful Energy Without a Mega-Stim Dose
Caffeine is the most immediately noticeable ingredient in Sauce and one of the best-supported ergogenic aids in sports nutrition. It can improve alertness, reduce perceived effort and enhance multiple forms of exercise performance. The most consistently effective research range is often described as approximately 3 to 6 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, although lower doses around 2 milligrams per kilogram can work for some people (Guest et al., 2021).
Sauce uses 200 milligrams of caffeine from green coffee and green tea sources. For many adults, that is enough to be useful without pushing the formula into the “maximum stimulation at any cost” category. It also leaves room for the user's body size, tolerance and other dietary caffeine to matter.
Two cautions matter: caffeine-sensitive users should start below a full scoop, and late-day caffeine can damage sleep even when it improves the workout.
150 Milligrams of L-Theanine: A Thoughtful Caffeine Pairing
L-theanine is an amino acid naturally associated with tea. Controlled cognitive studies using caffeine and L-theanine together have reported improvements in selected measures of attention, alertness and task switching (Haskell et al., 2008; Giesbrecht et al., 2010).
The response varies, but 150 milligrams of L-theanine alongside 200 milligrams of caffeine creates a rational, balanced alertness profile.
1.5 Grams of L-Tyrosine: Focus Support When Demand Is High
L-tyrosine is used to make catecholamine neurotransmitters, and research suggests it may be most useful under cognitive demand, environmental stress or fatigue. Sauce provides 1.5 grams - a meaningful amount - but tyrosine is not a stimulant or a guarantee of “laser focus.”
Lion's Mane and Cordyceps: Emerging Botanicals With Real Caveats
Sauce includes 300 milligrams each of Lion's Mane fruiting-body extract and Cordyceps militaris fruiting-body extract.
Lion's Mane research on cognition and stress is preliminary, and the extracts and doses in human trials vary (Docherty et al., 2023). Cordyceps research is also mixed; one positive trial used a different 4-gram multi-mushroom blend for several weeks (Hirsch et al., 2017). These botanicals broaden the formula, but they are less established acute drivers than caffeine, beta-alanine and citrulline.
AstraGin, Black Pepper Extract and Sodium
AstraGin and black pepper extract are formulation-support ingredients; their presence does not prove better absorption of every active. Sauce also provides 105 milligrams of sodium, a useful contribution but not a complete electrolyte strategy for long, hot or high-sweat sessions.
Why the Overall Formula Makes Sense
Sauce is well structured for four reasons:
1. The label is transparent. Every major amount is disclosed; there is no proprietary blend hiding underdosed ingredients.
2. The stimulant level is controlled. Two hundred milligrams of caffeine is substantial but not excessive by high-stim pre-workout standards.
3. The formula has multiple jobs. Citrulline and Nitrosigine target blood-flow support; beta-alanine and betaine target repeated work; caffeine, theanine and tyrosine target alertness and focus.
4. The core doses are meaningful. Seven grams of L-citrulline, 3.2 grams of beta-alanine, 2.5 grams of betaine and 1.5 grams of Nitrosigine are not label decoration.
Individual response still varies, but this is more coherent than a product built almost entirely around a large stimulant dose and token extras.
How to Use Bullpen Sauce Pre-Workout
Begin with one-half scoop to assess tolerance, especially if you are new to pre-workout or sensitive to caffeine or beta-alanine. A full scoop is generally best taken approximately 30 to 60 minutes before training, mixed with enough water to drink comfortably.
Do not stack it with another pre-workout or large caffeine source without calculating the total, and keep it far enough from bedtime to protect sleep. Beta-alanine works through regular intake; caffeine works acutely.
Creatine can be used alongside Sauce. Creatine monohydrate supports cellular energy stores over time, while Sauce is designed around the training session itself. For long or high-volume sessions, Cluster Dextrin can add intra-workout carbohydrate fuel without adding more stimulation.
Bullpen Sauce Pre-Workout FAQs
Is 200 milligrams of caffeine strong?
It is a moderate-to-strong dose for many adults and may be high for a caffeine-naive user. Body size, genetics, medications and habitual caffeine intake all influence the response.
Why does pre-workout make my skin tingle?
The likely cause is beta-alanine paresthesia. It is usually temporary and harmless, but it is not a measure of product quality or effectiveness.
Does Sauce need to be taken every day?
Caffeine does not need to be used daily, and regular use can increase tolerance. Beta-alanine works best with consistent daily intake. Athletes can use Sauce on training days while managing total beta-alanine intake according to their goals.
Is Sauce only for bodybuilding?
No. Its ingredient profile can fit resistance training, functional fitness, repeated sprint work and other high-intensity sessions. Endurance athletes should consider whether caffeine, carbohydrate and hydration needs match the duration and conditions of their event.
Who should avoid or get medical guidance before using it?
Anyone pregnant or nursing, under 18, highly caffeine-sensitive, managing cardiovascular or blood-pressure concerns, or taking medication that may interact with stimulants, tyrosine, black pepper extract or other ingredients should consult a qualified health professional before use.
The Bottom Line
A scientifically responsible pre-workout article should not pretend that a long ingredient list guarantees a great workout. What separates a credible formula is transparent dosing, a clear purpose for each ingredient and honest treatment of the evidence.
Bullpen Sauce meets that standard unusually well. Its 7 grams of L-citrulline, 3.2 grams of beta-alanine, 2.5 grams of betaine, 1.5 grams of Nitrosigine and 200 milligrams of caffeine form a legitimate performance base. L-theanine and tyrosine strengthen the focus design, while Citriva, taurine, Lion's Mane and Cordyceps add complementary support with more emerging or mixed evidence.
It is not a substitute for programming, food or sleep. It is a transparent tool built to help a prepared athlete get more from a hard session.
